Webinars

The Australasian Bat Society is pleased to be hosting a series of webinars where experts will share their unique insights.

Online talks are free for ABS members and $10 for non-members. With optional donations.

Money raised from ticket sales will go towards future Bat Carer Support Grants to assist registered bat carers experiencing increased financial pressure due to the costs of caring for flying-foxes or insectivorous bats in rehabilitation.

New Zealand bats with Dr Ian Davidson-Watts

Dr Ian Davidson-Watts is a Director of Davidson-Watts Ecology (DWE) Ltd in the UK (and DWE Pacific Ltd in NZ) and specialises in advanced bat surveys (trapping and radio tracking) and novel development related mitigation projects, especially involving rare forest bat species. Ian did his PhD on Europe’s smallest bat species, and has been involved in bat conservation and research since 1993, including the conservation of swarming bats at underground sites and the ecology of the rare barbastelle and Bechstein’s bats.

Ian is currently providing evidenced-based approaches to strategic assessment of bats for land management, strategic development, major housing and landscape-scale infrastructure projects and wind farms through the delivery of over 100 advanced bat survey projects in both the UK and New Zealand. Ian has a special interest in acoustic lures for improving bat capture rates, and over the last few years has bene researching and optimising their effectiveness for NZ’s two rare and patchily distributed bat species.
