The ABS is excited to announce the opening of the NightWings Foundation-
sponsored ABS grant. It supports applied research projects that inform the conservation of bat roosting and/or feeding habitat or projects that improve the public perception of bats. Funding available
A single grant of $5000 or multiple grants with a total funding pool of $5000 is available to ABS members, with a preference by NightWings Foundation for funds to be allocated to a flying-fox focused project, particularly in areas earmarked for development on the east coast of Australia. However, funds may be awarded to projects in other areas and those that are focused on echolocating bats if no suitable flying-fox focused projects are submitted. Projects are expected to be completed within 18 months of the grant being awarded. How to apply:

Assessment of applications
The assessment process will be double-blind, and all applications will be anonymised prior to being passed onto the assessment panel. Applicants are asked to anonymise applications by removing their names and other details that may make them readily identifiable.
Applications will usually be assessed by a selection panel of three people, derived from the ABS executive (including the extended executive). At times, if needed, the ABS may call on additional experts to assist in assessing a project application, or the Secretary may need to contact applicants to ask for more information.
All applications will be assessed on merit; that is, how well the project matches our objectives, its viability, the project’s value for money, how the project compares with other funding proposals and how well it is demonstrated that the project will inform the conservation of bat roosting and/or feeding habitat or improve the public perception of bats. Only applications determined by the selection panel to be suitable for funding will be eligible to receive funding.

Payment of funding
Successful applicants will be required to sign an assistance agreement that describes the ABS’s commitment to your project and asks you, in turn, to agree to meet the conditions of assistance (set out below). The assistance agreement must be signed and returned to the ABS in order to receive funding. On receipt of the assistance the successful applicant will receive 80% of the total amount granted. The final 20% will be paid on receipt of the article to the Australasian Bat Society Newsletter regarding the project (see conditions of
assistance below).

- Submit an article to the Australasian Bat Society Newsletter about the project and its achievements. This article will also be published on the ABS website as a standalone article.
- Provide a brief project summary and image that can be used to promote the project on ABS social media channels.
- Make freely available the results of ABS funded work wherever possible.
- Acknowledge the support of the NightWings supported ABS grant in publications or public presentations etc. about the project.
- Indicate that they have obtained (or will obtain) the necessary permits to carry out the project.
- Offer to an approved public zoological collection, any specimens which may be collected as a result of support by the fund.
